Pintor oficial da corte espanhola, Velázquez retratava o mundo da realeza com implacável &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;naturalism&lt;/span&gt;o, seguindo a tradição do artista italiano Caravaggio (Michelangelo Merisi, 1573-1610),&lt;span style=";font-family:Verdana;font-size:10;color:black;"   &gt;&lt;/span&gt; cujo trabalho admirava enormemente. No centro da pintura, está a infanta Margarida Teresa, filha do rei Filipe IV. Era pouco comum mulheres praticarem a arte no século XVII. Não se permitia que entrassem nas salas de aula onde se estudavam as formas da anatomia humana. Esse último aparece no filme como o quadro que estava sendo pintado de forma concomitante ao retrato de Griet. O pai de Griet aparece ferido por um grave e inesperado acidente.&lt;br /&gt;Em 1654, Delft é parcialmente destruída por um grande incêndio depois da explosão de um paiol de pólvora. No acidente, morreu Carel Fabritius (1622-1654), o discípulo mais talentoso de Rembrant. Fabricius estabeleceu-se em Delft e exerceu grande influência nos artistas da cidade.
